preterit BE + ING



Le prétérit en BE + -ING

 Rappel: le prétérit simple. Action passée, datée, terminée, courte.

 Le prétérit en BE+-ING:
 
il exprime une action en progression dans le passé, une action qui était en train de se dérouler quand une autre action s'est enclenchée.

Formation
auxiliaire BE au prétérit (was/were) + Base Verbale + -ING

Exemples
Were they playing football when you saw them yesterday?
(les enfants étaient-ils en train de jouer au football hier, au moment où vous les avez vus ?) 

Réponses
Yes, they were playing football when I saw them yesterday.
= Yes, they were.

No, they weren't playing football when I saw them yesterday.
= No, they weren't.

Choisir entre preterit simple et preterit BE + ING

Haut du formulaire
I (have) a bath yesterday when the phone (ring). ' That must be my mother,' I (think). As I (get) out of the bath, I (put) my foot on my watch and I (break) it. The phone (still/ring). I (run) out of the bathroom and I (hit) my head on the floor. It (hurt) terribly and I (want) to sit down for a moment but the phone (still/ring). ' Please wait a minute, mother,' I (think). Preterit



Preterit

On l’utilise pour parler de faits passés qui n’ont aucun rapport direct avec le moment où on parle.

Sa construction est très simple : 

Affirmatif
Verbes réguliers : j’ajoute ED à la base verbale, à toutes les personnes

Ex : I walk = I walked
       She wants = she wanted
Verbes irréguliers : je les apprends par coeur!!
Négatif
auxiliaire DIDN’T + VERBE à toutes les personnes

NB : Le piège est de ne pas remettre le verbe au prétérit. DIDN’T est déjà au prétérit, donc pas besoin de mettre le verbe aussi au passé.

ex : I don’t walk = I didn’t walk
       She doesn’t talk = she didn’t talk
interrogatif
Auxiliaire DID + SUJET + VERBE à l’infinitif  

NB : Le piège est de ne pas remettre le verbe au prétérit. DID est déjà au prétérit, donc pas besoin de mettre le verbe aussi au passé.

Ex : I walked = Did I walk ?
       She talked = Did she talk ?
